Our mission

Our mission is to ignite a lifelong passion for environmental stewardship in children by helping educators and youth organizations connect students with the native plants and ecosystems of South Florida. Through hands-on projects, such as creating vibrant native plant and butterfly gardens in local elementary schools, and engaging presentations about the beauty and importance of these plants, we aim to foster a deep appreciation for nature. By sharing personal experiences and conservation knowledge, we strive to help educators empower the next generation to become informed, enthusiastic caretakers of their environment.

What we do
Budding Botanists works with local schools and youth organizations to create and advise on projects related to environmental action and education. Founder Edie Carneiro uses her own experiences — from sustainable farming in the British Virgin Islands to studying coral bleaching in the Florida Keys — to connect with students on their level.
Some of the ways we can work with your school or organization are:
- Classroom presentations
- Classroom projects and activities
- art projects with recycled materials
- scavenger hunts
- ”plant your own seed” activities with native plants
- Team competitions (e.g., using presentation knowledge to then create an animal with ecological adaptations to South Florida)
- Holiday activities (e.g., Mother’s Day bouquets)
- Native plant tour of your school
- Advisory services for greenhouse or butterfly garden projects
- Planning Earth Day curriculum
- Consulting for environmental clubs and committees.
